Deming athlete stops, renders aid to competitor

When a runner fell during a cross country meet last weekend, Deming High senior Maricuz Colores-Davila could have kept running. Runners stumble, competitors keep going, nothing to it.

Colores-Davila, pictured here during the meet at Fort Bayard, was bounding to a top-10 finish last Saturday when one of her competitors — an athlete from Organ Mountain High School in Las Cruces — fainted on the course. This Deming Wildcat stopped to render aid while the runner’s parent rushed to her side, and only then did Colores-Davila finish her race. (She still came in tenth, by the way.)

The Headlight applauds not only her strong finish but the strong character she exhibited when caught by surprise.
